Food & Friends delivers Thanksgiving meals to sick

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Thanksgiving morning, tens of millions of Americans will be in the kitchen putting together their Thanksgiving feasts.

But for those who are too ill to prepare the holiday meal, a local organization is stepping in to help.

Food & Friends will provide complete holiday meals to people living with AIDS, HIV, cancer and other serious illnesses.

The meals, which serve four people, include a full turkey and all the fixings.

A long line of volunteers was already forming at 4:00 a.m.

What began as a small group of volunteers in 1988 with a couple hundred clients is now a huge operation serving 3,000 clients living in D.C., Maryland and Virginia.

Throughout the year, 14,500 volunteers for Food & Friends.

Woman sexually assaulted in NW DC

NORTHWEST, DC (WUSA9) -- A disturbing crime in an area that you normally think of as a safe place to walk.

Police say a woman was robbed at an ATM and then sexually assaulted. Police say the robbery took place in the 5100 block of Wisconsin Avenue and forced to walk several blocks to 44th Street Northwest.

It happened in Friendship Heights which is sandwiched between Tenley Town and Mazza Gallerie.  It's a vibrant, walking neighborhood with shops and restaurants.

Police say the suspect followed the woman to an ATM. They are not sure which ATM  but they're checking several in the area.
The suspect threatened her with a knife and robbed her.

Michelle Shableski, an area resident says "That's really horrible, that makes me feel I can't go outside behind my house.  That's such a horrible thing to hear. I had no idea."

Shableski has lived in this fairly quiet neighborhood for five years.

Police investigating 2 overnight assaults in DC

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- D.C. police are investigating two sex assaults on Tuesday.

Police say that at about 11 p.m., a woman was walking in the 5100 block of 44th St NW when she was forced into an alley by an unknown suspect, robbed and sexually assaulted.

The suspect is described as a black male, medium to dark complexion, 40-50 years old, 5'4" to 5'-7" in height wearing an olive green coat, officials said.

The other incident, which police do not believe is related, happened on Okie St. NE at 8:30 p.m., officials said. 

Police say the victim accepted a ride from an unknown male who drove her to an unknown location, pulled out a knife and demanded that she perform a sexual act.

The victim did not comply and was assaulted. Police say this was not a sexual assault.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male in his 40s wearing a black NorthFace coat and a knit hat, driving a white four-door sedan, officials said.

Italo Ceramica, a ceramic tile retailer with 36 stores in Europe, celebrated the opening of its first US showroom located at 725 Rockville Pike in Rockville, Maryland this month. The Italo Ceramica team welcomed more than 120 design industry professionals, media and customers for a grand opening celebration with special guests Andrea Bacchini, North America Market Director for Imola Ceramica, Italo Ceramica’s partner, and artist Alexander Stefan, who exhibited his photography. Stefan also raffled off one of his works during the evening event.
